Not all classrooms have four walls - working outside in a natural environment is a great way for children to develop confidence and self-esteem; build positive relationships and develop a growing awareness of their emotional needs and the needs of others.
At Belmont, we have a great outdoor space - our grounds and Wildlife Area - that children can access all year round. We are also fortunate in being able to access our local Londonthorpe Woods that are in walking distance of the school. To give our children the opportunity to explore the natural world around them, Reindeer Class - EYFS, enjoy Footprint Friday each week and from Year 1, children take part in Forest School sessions. These are led by accredited Level 3 Forest School Practitioner Mrs Pallier, supported by another member of staff. Classes attend Forest School sessions throughout the school year, whatever the weather, allowing them opportunity to experience the seasonal changes that take place around them in a familiar environment.
What is Forest School All About?
Forest School is not a ‘one-off’ session but is built up long-term over regular opportunities for children to be in an outdoors woodland environment that allows all learners to achieve and develop skills of self-esteem and confidence. The children are able to undertake a range of practical activities and carry out small achievable tasks. At Forest School, children can develop their team working skills and also learn to become more independent. Those unfamiliar with woodland and green spaces can become confident in using them and this can form the basis of a life-long relationship with natural spaces.

What Do We Do?
There are lots of activities at Forest School which assist the children in developing their holistic learning in a hands on way. These include den building, muddy art, bug hunting, whittling using knives, sawing, hide and seek games.
