A Fantastic Girls' Football Tournament!

Our footballers were very excited to play in the annual Y5/6 girls' football tournament at the King's School playing field last week. The Belmont girls were placed into a group consisting of 4 other teams from the Grantham area and the girls didn’t disappoint!

In their first match, an enthralling game saw our girls concede a late goal, to lose 2-1 to eventual group winners Claypole; with our goal being a worldie from Amelia, a right-footed effort from outside the box which looped into the top corner, putting us back into the game at 1-1 and eventually announced as Goal of the Tournament!!

Our second game saw us come out 2-0 winners against St Sebastian’s where the girls put up a dominant display with goals from both Eva and Arabella. Our third game against Huntingtower saw the Belmont girls come out as unlucky 3-0 losers but that score line didn’t reflect both the effort and on field display put on by all involved. This was conveyed to the girls, who took the unlucky result as motivation to dominate the final game against Great Ponton and come out as 2-0 winners with goals from both Arabella and Amelia!

This saw our girls place 3rd in our group which would mean we would play against the other team that finished 3rd in the other group of 5 - Barrowby! As this was the final game, Mr Kyberd and Mr Allsopp decided to shuffle people around in positions they hadn’t played. Despite this change, the girls played fantastic in somewhat unfamiliar positions and with a late solo effort from Amelia, managed to earn a very deserving draw!! To the dismay of Mr Kyberd there would be no penalties to decide the winner!

After winning goal of the tournament we were then put in a tough spot to decide our player of the tournament between our 8 girls who all thoroughly deserved it. That honour was bestowed upon Eva, who played brilliantly in midfield (and in defence in the final game) working up and down the pitch, pressing, dominating the midfield at times with her incredible work rate and even scoring a thoroughly deserved goal!

Overall, Mr Kyberd, Mr Togher and Mr Allsopp were blown away by the stunning performances the girls put together against some incredibly tough opposition and this message was echoed by the parents who came to support. Once again a brilliant day that has got us all eager for girls fixtures later in the year!

Thank you to those parents for coming to support and thank you to the King's School, Priory Ruskin Academy and Inspire Plus for helping to run the event, our girls thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
