Both of our football teams have been in action this term, with terrific results! Our girl's team had the opportunity to represent our school at the School Games Girl’s Football Tournament held at King’s Playing Field in early November. We were lucky to be drawn in a group of 4, meaning we had 3 matches to play in the group stages. We started off our first game very well, attacking from the outset, as we did in all of our group games. We came out 1-0 winners! We then followed this up with a very impressive 3-0 win and finally finishing off the group games with another 3-0 win. These successes meant that we made it through to the semi-finals, a great achievement! We played absolutely fantastic in the game and it was a brilliant game to watch; a very close, competitive encounter.
Unfortunately, we came out losing 2-1 in the semi-finals to a team who had won all of their previous games by 6 or more goals and went on to win the final with another comfortable score line. Our girls were able to hold their heads up high even after defeat, it was such a great team performance! After losing the semi-final, we had one more game, giving us a chance to finish 3rd overall. This again was another great game of football to watch, a very close contest, in which we came out eventual winners with a fantastic goal scored from the half way line! A goal worthy enough to win any game of football but this one meant that we came third overall and were awarded bronze medals!
Following on from the success at the Girl’s Tournament, we had the Mixed Football Tournament. This team saw two of the girls from the previous tournament join up with the boys to compete. We started off brilliantly, working hard, working together and showing great football talent and determination. Our first game saw us draw 1-1, we followed this up with a 2-0 win and finally finished our group games off with a fantastic 4-0 win. This put us in 1st place, just waiting for the final game in the group to finish. At this point, we needed one of the teams to not win by more than 3 goals - this would’ve then seen us progress, as did the girls, into the semi-finals.
Unfortunately, this game finished 4-0, meaning we finished second in the group, joint on points with the leaders but scoring only one goal less! The final game saw us take on the team that finished 2nd in the adjacent group to ours. Again, this was a fantastic, entertaining game of football with chances at both ends which we were unlucky to lose 1-0, but it was another great game to finish off a great day of football!
A big well done to both of our teams. They represented us brilliantly and showed true Team Belmont characteristics all day!
