Keeping The Olympic Legacy Alive With Outdoor Table Tennis!

There's a brand new sport available on the KS2 playground thanks to the kind award of an outdoor table tennis table by the organisation GAPS (Grantham Academy for Primary and Secondary Schools). Run by a dedicated team of volunteer coaches and parents working under the direction of qualified coaches, GAPS aims to keep the Olympic Legacy alive by inspiring children to take up this fantastic sport and learn what it is like to play sport competitively.

Belmont is very fortunate that the players in our thriving table tennis club are coached by Mr John Mapletoft (English Table Tennis Children's Coach of the Year 2010), along with Mrs Nix. The club is always over subscribed but now with this outdoor table all pupils will have the opportunity to play - and it will indeed be a fun challenge playing outside where the ball will be subjected to the wind!

Last week, we were pleased to welcome GAPS treasurer, Mrs Giddens, to see our players in action. Everyone was also excited to see that Mr Mapletoft had brought with him his Olympic Torch from 2012! He was one of the members of our community who were chosen to run with the torch as it travelled around the country prior to the Games.

Everyone at Belmont would like to say a huge thank you to GAPS for their award. It is very much appreciated and will be used by pupils for many years to come. Maybe one of our players will take on the Olympic challenge themselves!
