We are delighted to let you know that John Mapletoft is again working alongside Mrs Nix at the Table Tennis Club each week. As you may know, John has been coaching table tennis for over 50 years and was awarded the BEM (British Empire Medal) for his services to the sport in the 2021 New Year’s Honours list. He received the honour from the Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire in September.
John has coached well over 1,000 children over the years and we’re proud to say this includes not only children from Belmont but also several staff when they were younger! One of our special memories is when he brought in the Olympic torch he carried in the 2012 Olympics torch relay when it took place in Grantham! Each year the club is one of the most popular in the school and we are thrilled that our children continue to benefit from his expertise.
During the recent lockdowns, John took the opportunity to write his memoir, “The Table Tennis Legacy 1950 – 2020: The Memoirs of John Mapletoft”. Full of anecdotes and photos, it’s a fantastic source of information about the history of table tennis in our local area.
