Elk 2019 - 2020

Gainsborough Old Hall

We had a fabulous time on our trip with Fallow Class in March. We went into lockdown because of the Coronavirus only a few days later!.

Fantastic Art Learning

This term we have been learning about the artist Ernst Haekel and have used some of his techniques to create some wonderful drawings. You can see an example of a super Learning Journey below.

Shapes

Our focus in Maths this term has been shapes, both 2D and 3D. One of the tasks was to find all of the nets that don't make a cube.

Keeping Ourselves Safe Online

For this year's Safer Internet day, we learnt about our online identity and how we can keep safe whilst being online.

The Sound Collector

There was great work from everyone in the class when we created our own version of The Sound Collector by Roger McGough.

Christmas Fun

The end of term was lots of fun. The children did a super job as narrators for our Christmas production of the Nativity. The last day of term began with our Christingle celebration where two children from the class carefully carried a lit candle into the hall as the choir sang 'Away in a Manger'.  Afterwards, we were so excited when Santa joined us during our party and I was very proud of all of the children when we joined the rest of the school for the Christmas singalong.

Polar Express Day!

We had a great time on our Polar Express day with Impala Class! The children brought in dressing gowns and teddies and acted out travelling on the Polar Express to the North Pole. We had lots of fun, especially when the train went really quickly down the mountain!

Everyone had hot chocolate and cookies just like the children in the film.

The Great Fire of London With Partake

We all thoroughly enjoyed re-enacting the Great Fire of London!

RE Week - Sukkot

This year, our focus in RE week was one of the World's major religions, Judaism. We had the opportunity to recreate an important festival to help the children understand a different faith and culture.

The festival of Sukkot celebrates the gathering of the harvest and commemorates the sheltering of the Israelites in the wilderness. The main objective of the holiday is to build a Sukkah, a small temporary shelter which provides shade while allowing those inside of it to see the sky. The children really enjoyed gathering the materials and building their very own Sukkahs!

There are more photos in the Photo Gallery.

Van Gogh

We have been studying the artist Van Gogh this term and the children created some fabulous fire pictures in his style.

Putting Out The Fire!

We were so excited to welcome members of the Grantham Fire Service to Belmont to talk to the children about fire safety. We had great fun learning about the fire engine and were able to climb inside and then have a go using the hose!

Orion and the Dark

This fantastic story by Emma Yarlett is about facing your fears. Orion is scared of a lot of things: monsters, wasps, popping balloons, and haircuts, for example. But the scariest thing of all is . . . the dark. The children loved reading about Orion, discussing each page and wrote some amazing poems for how he could overcome his fears.

Important Questions

We have four questions of the term for the children to find out the answers to. Why do we recycle?, Why do people look different?, How can you make music? and Why can’t I eat dessert all the time? We have been watching a science show called Storybots to help us find out the answers and the children have written some great responses.

DigiDog and DigiPup

We are so excited that DigiDog and DigiPup have joined Year 2 to help us with our e-safety learning this year. In class we will talking about the things we should teach DigiPup before we let him go online, and every weekend one of the children from the class will be able to take DigiPup home. We would like the children to talk with their family about how they can have fun online and what's okay and what's not okay to do on the internet. They can also write a DigiPup diary or story to tell us what happened when they took him home and how they made sure he stayed happy and safe.
