Visual Support Boards

What Are Visual Support Boards?

Visual support boards are tools that use pictures, symbols, words, or schedules to help children understand what is happening, what’s expected of them, and what comes next. They are especially helpful for children who learn better through visual information or who may have difficulty with communication, attention, or transitions — such as children with autism, ADHD, or speech delays.

Why Are They Helpful?

  • 🧠 Support understanding: Some children process visual information more easily than spoken words.
  • 🗣️ Reduce anxiety: Knowing what is coming next can make a child feel safer and more in control.
  • 🚦 Set clear expectations: They help children understand rules, routines, and choices.
  • ⏳ Smooth transitions: They prepare children for changes, like leaving the park or starting bedtime.
  • 🙌 Encourage independence: Children can use the board to guide themselves through tasks or routines.

How To Use Them At Home

  1. Keep it simple – Start with just a few pictures or steps.
  2. Be consistent – Use it during regular routines like mornings, bedtime, or chores.
  3. Make it visual – Use photos of real objects, symbols, or drawings.
  4. Praise success – When your child follows the board, celebrate it!
