Mindfulness For Us All
Mindfulness is a technique that can benefit us in many ways, including reducing anxiety and improving focus and attention. Mindfulness is the act of being fully present in the moment, without distraction. It can help to control mind-wandering and to stop repetitive and unhelpful thoughts. Mindfulness is a valuable tool in our mental health toolbox. Being outside and connecting to nature is a great way to encourage mindfulness.
Here are some ways that mindfulness can be taught to us:
- 1. Breathing Exercises: Encourage children to take deep breaths in through their nose and out through their mouth, focusing on the sensation of the air entering and leaving their body. This can be done for a few minutes each day, or as needed when children are feeling overwhelmed or anxious.
- 2. Mindful Colouring: Colouring can be a calming activity that can help children focus and relax. Mindful colouring involves colouring slowly and deliberately, paying attention to the colours, shapes, and lines on the page. This can help children be fully present in the moment and can also be a way for them to express their emotions.
- 3. Body Scans: Body scans involve focusing on each part of the body, starting from the toes and working up to the head. Encourage children to notice any sensations or feelings in each part of their body as they scan through it. This can help children become more aware of their physical sensations and can also promote relaxation.
- 4. Mindful Listening: Mindful listening is a technique that can help children improve their attention and focus. Encourage children to listen carefully to sounds around them. This can help them become more aware of their surroundings and can also be a way for them to practice being present in the moment.
- 5. Mindful Walking: Mindful walking is a technique that can help children become more aware of their physical sensations and their surroundings. Encourage children to walk slowly and deliberately, paying attention to each step and the feeling of their feet touching the ground. This can be done indoors or outdoors and can also be a way for children to connect with nature.
- 6. Gratitude Practice: Gratitude is an important aspect of mindfulness, as it helps children focus on the positive aspects of their lives. Encourage children to think of things they are grateful for each day, whether it is a favourite toy, a friend, or a sunny day. This can help them cultivate a positive outlook and promote feelings of happiness and contentment.
